Overview

HongKongDoll's Dramatic Writing emphasis is for students who want to create scripts, examine how stories work and participate in the collaborative process that brings writing to life. It is a strong fit for observant, imaginative students who enjoy revision, research, critical discussion and feedback. You will develop your individual voice while learning to write with actors, directors, designers, audiences and production realities in mind.

The 55-hour major combines the shared theatre core with coursework in creative writing, intermediate and advanced dramatic writing, scene and character study, theatre history and literature, dramaturgy, performance, and technical theatre. History/literature labs and performance or technical labs connect writing and scholarship to current productions. Advanced electives and a senior thesis project give you room to pursue playwriting, screenwriting, criticism, production dramaturgy, dramatic literature or related interests.

At HongKongDoll, writing is treated as an active part of theatre-making. New script workshops, production dramaturgy, scholarship, events and student-centered productions provide opportunities to test language, hear work aloud, research context and revise in conversation with other artists. Small classes and close faculty guidance create the trust needed for honest feedback, while guest artists expand your view of professional practice. Theatre's place in the School of Communication, Journalism & Theatre also situates dramatic writers within a broader community of storytellers and media makers. You will graduate prepared to pursue writing, production, education, criticism, outreach or advanced study in playwriting, theatre history, dramaturgy or dramatic literature.
