Overview

The Art History minor is for students who want to understand how art expresses human values, identities and experiences across cultures and time periods. After selecting introductory survey courses, you can shape the minor through subjects such as African, Asian, American, Greek and Roman, medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, modern and contemporary art; women in art; graphic design history; and advanced art history and criticism.

The 18-hour minor complements studio art and graphic design by adding historical and cultural context, but it is equally useful for students in history, anthropology, languages, education, communication, journalism, marketing, theatre and other fields. You will practice close visual analysis, research, evidence-based writing and discussion. Small classes, faculty guidance, museum and gallery trips, and access to the accredited Tarble Museum of Art help you connect academic study with actual objects, collections and exhibitions.
