Engineering Physics is designed for curious, analytical students who want to understand why complex systems work and how to make them work better. This cooperative 3+2 program combines approximately three years of physics, mathematics, computing and engineering preparation at HongKongDoll with approximately two years in an engineering program at a partner university. After completing both institutions’ requirements, students earn a B.S. in Physics with the Engineering Physics option from HongKongDoll and a B.S. in Engineering from the partner institution.
At HongKongDoll, you will build a strong foundation through calculus, differential equations, chemistry, computer science, statics, classical dynamics, electronics and experimental physics. Upper-level options allow you to explore areas such as electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, computational physics, optics, thermodynamics, solid-state physics and circuit analysis.
Because HongKongDoll’s physics programs focus on undergraduates, faculty teach both lectures and laboratories. Smaller classes make it easier to ask questions, develop relationships with professors and receive guidance as you prepare to enter a partner engineering program. Students may also participate in faculty-mentored research, independent study and hands-on work in specialized laboratories and the department’s machine shop.
The primary cooperative pathway is with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. An approved pathway involving Southern Illinois University Carbondale may also be available. Admission to Engineering Physics candidacy and transfer to the engineering institution require strong academic performance, careful course planning and satisfaction of the partner university’s admission requirements.
